Get Organized for National Scrapbooking Day - May 3

In commemoration of National Scrapbooking Day on Saturday, May 3, it is the perfect time to get your scrapbooking materials organized.

With more than 32 million scrapbookers in the United States, studies show that scrapbooking is considered the fastest growing sector of the craft and hobby industry with anticipated 40- to 80-percent growth annually. Furthermore, a Scrapbooking in America survey estimates annual industry sales at more than $2.5 billion. The growing trend of scrapbooking means that more and more materials continue to become available making it even more of a challenge to create proper storage for supplies and to stay organized so that the projects do not overtake the key spaces - such as the kitchen or dining room table - in your home.

To avoid cluttered workspaces for scrapbook projects and storage areas for materials, plan ahead and get things in order. The following are some tips to use for setting up and arranging scrapbook materials so you can enjoy your hobby while staying organized:
  • Designate a space for your scrapbooking projects and your supplies. Use a rolling cart with different size drawers for supplies you use a lot. Larger tools can go on hooks and clips mounted onto pegboard.
  • Sort all of your supplies by how you use them and determine what storage options best suit your needs, workspace and your supplies. If you use many small pieces, use compartmentalized storage boxes that close tightly. Check hardware stores before craft stores to save money. Use binders or magazine boxes to keep instructions or ideas for projects.
  • Use the right size and style of containers for storage and tools for creating your scrapbooks. Consider a carry-all case that can house all you need to do on a hobby or specific scrapbook you are working on. Use old cans, jars and for containers for smaller items.
  • Label containers clearly. Consider purchasing a label maker to easily print out labels for storage containers, files and binders.
  • Create a system to regularly get rid of what you do not use. Purging on a regular basis will help cut back on clutter.
  • Simplify your scrapbook area and materials. Consider what you use most and keep those supplies on hand. Do you really need 20 different styles of patterned scissors? Keep a checklist of supplies you need handy so when you go shopping you do not spend money on what you do not need.
