Keep Your Garage and Car Organized for the Summer
With the summer season upon us, garages are a busy hub of activity between gardening tools, sports equipment, camping gear and other supplies. According to the National Association of Professional Organizers, 50 percent of homeowners rate the garage as the most disorganized place in the house and a place the entire family uses regularly. Oftentimes that means that cars are relegated to the street or driveway. A U.S. Department of Energy study shows that 25 percent of people with two-car garages don’t park a car in the garage and that 32 percent of people only park one car in the garage. A garage needs to be home for your car all year around. The following are tips from us about how to keep your garage and car organized.
1. The goal is to keep the floor clear and safe. Make use of wall and ceiling space. Garages have lots of unused headroom space. You can buy ceiling-mounted racks specifically for outdoor recreational equipment or platforms that go up and down by lever.
2. Keep things off the floor! When organizing your garage, try to keep as much as possible off the floor. This will allow you to keep the floor area clean and dust free. Ideally, if you can store like items in clear containers and stack them on shelves, you will find it easy to maintain an organized garage throughout the summer.
3. Most of us clip coupons and then forget to use them before the expiration date. Or we are out running errands and remember we had a coupon or gift card at home for the item we need to purchase. The easiest solution is to either keep them in your purse or in your car. Sometimes all those retail coupons and gift cards junk up our already too-full purse.
Purchase a small Tupperware or clear box or even a pretty folder and keep all your coupons and gift cards in there. Of course you may want to tuck them under the seat or in another out-of-the-way place where they will not be in the way or be seen. When you acquire new ones just make a habit of carrying them out to the car and add them to your already organized system. This will save you time, money and gas!
